Note: though filling acorn squash with this casserole makes for a beautiful presentation and a fun dining experience, the casserole is plenty tasty enought to simply serve in a gratin?dish or bowl.????

I seem to be on a roll with humble beginnings lately.? This tasty and comforting dish?simple but pretty enough for company?was inspired by acorn squash that I had cooked a few days ago, but never eaten.? I had been planning to stuff them, but couldn?t decide with what.? But then, my husband and I went to dinner at Yard House in VA Beach for date night last Wednesday.? Neither of us are big starch eaters, so when he left his rice virtually uneaten on his plate, I asked the server to wrap it up along with all of the left-over greens from my very dull salad.? (I had eaten the cucumber and shredded carrots off of it, but that was about all?thank goodness for the very tasty hummus appetizer!)

So, absolutely starving yesterday after my morning yoga class, I remembered all of these ingredients, along with?the coconut milk in the fridge leftover from my Spicy Vegan ?Beef? and Zucchini Stew).? And, in just a few minutes, this mouth-watering dish was born.? It doesn?t have a lot of protein, yet it is filling.? So, I would probably enjoy it with a glass of soymilk and call it a meal.

2 acorn squash (about 1 pound each), cut in half horizontally, seeds and membrane removed with a spoon

1 tablespoon olive oil + additional for oiling baking dish and basting squash

1 medium onion, cut into 1/4-inch dice

Sea salt

4?large cloves of garlic, minced

4 cups mixed greens, large leaves torn if necessary (e.g. baby spinach, arugula, etc.)

Approximately 1/2 cup coconut milk (or other vegan creamer with a low sugar content)

Freshly ground black pepper

2 cups cooked brown rice

Garnish: approximately 12 smoked almonds

?Preheat oven to 400 degrees and lightly oil a baking sheet.? Place sqaush halves, cut side up, in a roasting pan.? Brush lightly with olive oil and sprinkle very lightly with sea salt.? Roast in the center of the oven for 45 to 60 minutes or unil tender, yet still firm enough to hold its shape.

After about 30 minutes of roasting, begin casserole.? In a large skillet (cast iron is always be preference), heat tablespoon of olive oil until shimmering.? Add onion and a pinch of salt,?and saute, stirring frequently, about 3 minutes or until onion is softened.? Add garlic and saute, stirring, another 30 seconds to 1 minute.? Add greens and saute, stirring, until wilted, but still bright green, about 2? minutes or so.? Stir? in coconut milk, black pepper, and cooked rice.? Check for salt and stir in more if necessary.? Continue cooking, lowering heat if necessary, until flavors marry and mixture is heated through.? Add additional coconut milk if necessary to reach desired consistency, which should be quite thick, like an oven-baked casserole.? When squash has finished cooking, fill each half with one-fourth of the casserole.? Garnish each with 3 smoked almonds and serve immediately.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The nightmarish case of a nanny accused of stabbing to death two children in her care stunned the family's well-to-do neighborhood and caused legions of parents to wonder how well they know who is watching their kids.

The nanny, Yoselyn Ortega, lay in critical condition Friday with what police said were self-inflicted knife wounds, and investigators were unable to question her, in part because she was still breathing with the help of a tube.

Her motive and mental state remained a mystery, and no immediate charges were filed.

On Thursday evening, the children's mother, Marina Kim, brought her 3-year-old daughter home from a swim lesson to find her other youngsters, ages 2 and 6, dying of knife wounds in the bathtub of their Upper West Side apartment near Central Park. Ortega then turned the blade on herself, police said.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said the investigation has yet to reveal anything amiss in the household before the slayings.

Police were looking into whether Ortega, a 50-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen who had worked for the family for two years, had recently sought psychiatric help.

If there was tension between the nanny and the Krims, it didn't show on a Web journal kept by the children's mother. Marina Krim spoke lovingly in one entry about traveling to the Dominican Republic last February to stay for several days at the home of Ortega's sister.

"We met Josie's amazing familia!!! And the Dominican Republic is a wonderful country!!" she wrote. Pictures posted on the blog showed the two families posing together for a happy photo, with Ortega hugging the 3-year-old, Nessie, their cheeks pressed together.

Marina Krim, whose husband, Kevin Krim, is a CNBC digital media executive, wrote that Ortega's family had nicknamed little Nessie "Rapida y Furiosa," (or Fast and Furious), for her exuberance and energy.

There are tens of thousands of nannies working in New York City, but reports of serious violence by caregivers against children are exceedingly rare. Parents are accused of killing their own children with far more frequency.

More common are stories about nannies like Brunilda Tirado, who threw her body over a stroller to protect a baby from falling debris during a building collapse in the same Manhattan neighborhood in 2005. She suffered a broken arm and other injuries.

The slayings will undoubtedly prompt many parents hiring a nanny to check references more thoroughly, and swallow hard over the possibility that they might unknowingly hire a person who would do their child harm.

"For working parents this is a nightmare. Every mother I know is asking today, 'How do I go back to work?'" said mother Denise Albert, who has two young children and lives a few blocks from the site of the tragedy.

She stopped by the building to pay her respects, recalling a painful time she had to fire a nanny after 3 1/2 years when she found out the woman was lying about where she was taking the kids.

"It's the most difficult relationship in the world," she said. Albert said the two college students now caring for her children after school feel like members of the family.

Some parents said their trust in their nannies is unshaken.

"It's a horrible tragedy, but it doesn't make me question my nanny at all," said Elizabeth McCarthy, a single mother of a 6-year-old boy. "For me, I found somebody I trust. She's an incredible part of my son's life. She's a wonderful person, she's raised children of her own, and this doesn't make me in the least bit question anything about her."

Across the street from the building where the Krims lived, several nannies with children in strollers stood as if stricken, watching police officers milling around the entrance.

Michelle Person, a nanny from Jamaica, broke down thinking about the children who were killed.

"You just feel like it was the kid that you were taking care of, too. It's horrible," she said, her eyes filling with tears. She said she loves the 11-month-old boy she cares for as if he were her own son.

Another nanny, Karen Henry, said she felt uncomfortable walking around the neighborhood after the deaths. "Parents are looking at you as though you're responsible for what happened," she said.

Multitudes of parents think of their nannies as Mary Poppins-like heroes and trust them completely, but the relationship can be a complicated one. There is maybe no other profession where the line between family and workplace, employer and employee, is so thin.

New York state passed a law two years ago to protect nannies from financial exploitation. They commonly work 10- to 12-hour days, for an hourly wage similar to that of a full-time employee at Walmart, usually without fringe benefits.

Sharon Weatley, a writer and actress who is a former nanny herself and now relies on baby sitters to take care of her daughters, ages 4 and 14, said that if Ortega did indeed kill the children, "she is obviously crazy and this is a chemical imbalance going on in a horrifically tragic situation."

"But I do think child care providers sometimes walk around with a lot of anger toward their employer," she added. "People ask them to do ridiculous things beyond the care of children. Then they get overworked and frustrated in the same way that a parent gets overworked."

Thursday's slayings evoked the case of Louise Woodward, a British teenager who was convicted of killing a baby in her care in Newton, Mass., in 1997. That case prompted discussion at the time about whether teenage au pairs could handle the stress of caring for a stranger's child. Woodward served less than a year in jail.

Ortega's case is different. She is older and had experience. Police said she came to the Krims on a referral from another family.

Cheryl Meyer, a psychology professor at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and co-author of the book "Mothers Who Kill Their Children," said that while many women who kill their kids feel trapped, in most cases a nanny who thinks she is at breaking point with a difficult child can walk out.

She said it's not uncommon to hear of a family where the nanny or baby sitter quits, leaving a note or just never coming back. "Moms can't do that. There's no way out for them. For a nanny, there is an out," Meyer said.

Axis M1031-W Network Camera

The Axis M1013-W Network Camera ($230 street)?can provide decent video surveillance for a home or small business. It can also form part of a fairly sophisticated small business surveillance system when used with Iomega's line of NAS devices, which have built-in support for Axis cameras. But some problems detecting the camera on the network with Axis software and grainy video mean the M1013-W isn't one of the most sophisticated IP cameras on the market, though it does provide some desirable features for a surveillance solution.

Specs
This small, compact camera can be connected to a network via Ethernet cable or wirelessly. The camera does not boast the latest in networking technology: the Ethernet port only supports 10/100 speed and the wireless is only 802.11 b/g. Although you won't get the fastest performance from such dated networking technology, the fact that the camera can connect wirelessly gives it more flexibility in placement than the Editors' Choice IP camera, Logitech's Alert 750n Indoor Master System ?which uses HomePlug powerline technology to connect to a network. The M1031-W also can be wall-mounted, and ships with an extension tube, mount screws, and a clamp.

The camera supports video resolutions of 640x480 (down to 160x120) and multiple H.264, Motion JPEG, and MPEG-4 video streams. On the camera is a WPS button LEDs for network and power status and a white LED that will light up as part of motion-detection if enabled or at the user's request. The camera also supports two-way audio and wireless security, including WEP 64/128 bit, WPA/WPA2-PSK, WPA, and WPA2 Enterprise.

Setup
Setting up the camera is quite easy: You connect it to a router or hub via Ethernet or use WPS to connect. What I found frustrating was the software used to detect the camera on the network that comes on a CD with the camera. No matter what I tried, the software refused to see the camera connected, even though the LEDs indicated a successful network connection and my router's information showed an IP address.

I finally gave up on the software. Once I found what IP address the camera was assigned, I just opened up a browser and typed in that IP. This got me into the camera's interface where I was able to set up a password for access and edit several configuration options such as turning on motion detection, changing the default video format and other settings.

Performance
While this isn't the most high-tech IP camera available?it doesn't offer HD video, though Axis makes a camera that does?it works very well as part of a video surveillance solution with Axis partner Iomega's NASes. With?included software in the Iomega StorCenter ix2-dl's ?interface, I was able to set up the camera to schedule recording and could view a live feed of the camera even remotely, thanks to Iomega's cloud service feature.

The video stream is rather grainy at 640x480, but clear enough to make out what's in the camera's field view as you are watching a video stream. The LED white light is really bright when turned on and I was able to clearly see into a pitch black room in which the camera set up.

You don't need a NAS to use the camera remotely. You can set it up with a dynamic DNS service and then download a video streaming app to view the feed. For businesses use, the Axis camera with an Iomega NAS provides extended functionality that a business would look for, such as scheduled recording, support for multiple feeds, and motion sensor detection.

Decent SMB Surveillance Capabilities
For a home user or a small business, the M1031-W along with a supported NAS such as Iomega's, makes a relatively low-cost, easy-to-setup video surveillance solution. The software that ships with the camera is terrible and bound to frustrate those not used to working around issues connecting devices to the network. That abysmal software knocks a few points off the camera's review score, as does its dated networking technology. But the Axis M1031-W still earns three out of five stars as a useful part of a small business or home networked video surveillance system.

Sandy pounds Bahamas after killing 40 in Caribbean

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) ? Hurricane Sandy rolled out of the Bahamas on Friday after causing 40 deaths across the Caribbean, churning toward the U.S. East Coast, where it threatens to join forces with winter weather fronts to create a devastating super storm.

The Category 1 hurricane toppled light posts, flooded roads and tore off tree branches as it charged through Cat Island and Eleuthera in the scattered archipelago, with authorities reporting one man killed, the British CEO of an investment bank.

The death toll was still rising in impoverished Haiti, reaching 26 on Friday as word of disasters reached officials and rain continued to fall.

Joseph Edgard Celestin, a spokesman for Haiti's civil protection office, said some people died trying to cross storm-swollen rivers. While the storm's center missed the country as it passed on Wednesday, Haiti's ramshackle housing and denuded hillsides make it especially vulnerable to flood damage.

Officials at a morgue in the western town of Grand Goave said a mudslide crashed through a wooden home on Thursday, killing 40-year-old Jacqueline Tatille and her four children, ranging in ages from 5 to 17.

"If the rain continues, for sure we'll have more people die," said morgue deputy Joseph Franck Laporte. "The earth cannot hold the rain."

Sandy was a Category 2 hurricane when it wreaked havoc in Cuba on Thursday, killing 11 people in eastern Santiago and Guantanamo provinces as its howling winds and rain destroyed thousands of houses and ripped off roofs. Authorities said it was Cuba's deadliest storm since July 2005, when category 5 Hurricane Dennis killed 16 people and caused $2.4 billion in damage.

Cuban authorities said the island's 11 dead included a 4-month-old boy who was crushed when his home collapsed and an 84-year-old man in Santiago province. Near the city of Guantanamo, the Communist Party daily Granma reported, two men were killed by falling trees.

Official news media reported Friday that the storm caused 5,000 houses to at least partially collapse while ripping the roofs off 30,000 others. Banana, coffee, bean and sugar crops were damaged.

Sandy also killed a man in Jamaica on Wednesday when a boulder crashed through his house, and police in the Bahamas said a 66-year-old man died after falling from his roof in upscale Lyford Cay late Thursday while trying to repair a window shutter. Officials at Deltec Bank & Trust identified him as Timothy Fraser-Smith, who became CEO in June 2000.

One death was reported in Puerto Rico. Police said a man in his 50s was swept away Friday by a swollen river in the southern town of Juana Diaz, where rain from Sandy's outer bands has been steadily falling.

On Friday afternoon, the hurricane's center was about 30 miles (50 kilometers) north-northeast of Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas and 430 miles (695 kilometers) south-southeast of Charleston, South Carolina. Sandy was moving north at 7 mph (11 kph) with maximum sustained winds near 75 mph (120 kph).

Government officials in the Bahamas said the storm seems to have inflicted the greatest damage on Cat Island, which took a direct hit, and Exuma, where there were reports of downed trees, power lines and damage to homes.

"I hope that's it for the year," said Veronica Marshall, a 73-year-old hotel owner in Great Exuma. "I thought we would be going into the night, but around 3 o'clock it all died down. I was very happy about that."

On Long Island, farmers lost most of their crops and several roofs were torn off, said legislator Loretta Butler-Turner. The island is without power and many residents do not have access to fresh water, she said.

With the storm projected to hit the Atlantic coast early Tuesday, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration warned it could merge with two other systems to become a hybrid, monster storm.

In the Bahamas, power was out on Acklins Island and most roads there were flooded, while in Ragged Island in the southern Bahamas, the lone school was flooded.

Russell, the emergency management official in Nassau, said docks on the western side of Great Inagua island had been destroyed and the roof of a government building was partially ripped off.

Jennifer Savoie, a New Orleans native who lives in Eleuthera, said that her fiance's resort, The Cove Eleuthera, was spared major damage but that power is out across most of the island.

"We know the protocol and how to prepare," she said. "It's in our blood. We were hit pretty hard though."

There were no reports of injuries at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, but there were downed trees and power lines, said Kelly Wirfel, a base spokeswoman. Officials canceled a military tribunal session scheduled for Thursday for the prisoner charged in the 2000 attack on the Navy destroyer USS Cole.

Officials reported flooding across Haiti, where many of the 370,000 people still displaced by the devastating 2010 earthquake scrambled for shelter. There are nearly 17,800 people in 131 temporary shelters, according to the Civil Protection Office.

Naturally, Lindsay's management team is totally pissed about her making deals behind their back. Not only did the actress screw them out of their 10%, they claim they could have gotten her waaaay more $$$ for the Mr. Pink gig!

Alright, we know there's a chance Mike is over exaggerating the circumstances. After all, the man REALLY wants the conservatorship over his daughter ? but at this point, perhaps that's what Lindsay really needs.

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? The foiling of a planned al-Qaida terror plot in Jordan underscores a new subplot in the story of the Arab Spring: Things are heating up for King Abdullah II, a Western-oriented monarch who has run a business-friendly, pragmatic monarchy with some trappings of democracy.

Jordan, a key U.S. ally that sits at a strategic crossroads between neighboring Syria, Iraq, the Palestinian territories, Israel and Saudi Arabia, has so far weathered 22 months of street protests calling for a wider public say in politics.

But this week's announcement that Jordanian authorities had thwarted an al-Qaida plan to attack shopping malls and Western diplomatic missions in the country has raised fears that extremists could take advantage of growing calls for change to foment violence.

The king also has been working overtime to fend off a host of domestic challenges, including a Muslim Brotherhood boycott of parliamentary elections, increasing opposition from his traditional Bedouin allies and an inability to keep the Syrian civil war from spilling over the border.

So far, Abdullah has largely maintained control, partly by relinquishing some of his powers to parliament and amending the country's 60-year-old constitution. His Western-trained security forces have been able to keep protests from getting out of hand. And most in the opposition remain loyal to the king, pressing for reforms but not his removal.

The stakes are high: Abdullah is a close friend of the United States and has been at the forefront in its global war on terrorism, including in Afghanistan. Jordan serves as a buffer zone to Saudi Arabia, another Sunni Muslim country, and to Israel, a friend under a peace treaty signed in 1994. The kingdom hosts the largest Palestinian population outside the West Bank.

"The worst nightmare would be for Israel and Saudi Arabia," said liberal lawmaker Jamil Nimri. "Jordan shares the longest border with Israel and is one of its few remaining Arab friends, while for the Saudis, it's a neighboring country with a similar monarchy system in trouble."

Concern over Jordan's stability was underlined last month, when its U.S., British and French allies quickly dispatched their military experts to help Jordanian commandos devise plans to shield the population in case of a chemical attack from neighboring Syria.

Jordan is worried that Syrian President Bashar Assad might lose control over his chemical weapons in the civil war and that his stock could subsequently fall into the hands of al-Qaida or Lebanon's Islamic militant group Hezbollah.

More than 210,000 Syrian refugees also have fled to the kingdom to escape the violence at home, straining basic services like water, electricity and the health care system.

In the past three months, dozens of Jordanian policemen were wounded in violent riots at a dust-filled refugee camp packed with 35,000 Syrians near the northern border.

A growing number of stray Syrian missiles also have fallen on Jordanian villages in the north in recent weeks, wounding several civilians as Assad widened his offensive against rebel holdouts near the Jordanian frontier.

A Jordanian border patrol officer also was shot dead Monday during army clashes with eight militants who sought to illegally cross a border fence into Syria.

Hours before the clash, Jordan announced that authorities had arrested 11 suspected al-Qaida-linked militants for allegedly planning to attack shopping malls and Western diplomatic missions in the country with explosives and rockets.

Two Arab diplomats, insisting on anonymity because they are not allowed to make press statements, said regional intelligence indicates that militants see Jordan as an "easy prey" as they try to consolidate their presence between hot spots.

"The Jordanian people can never enjoy complete stability when our country is surrounded by wars and uprisings," said Yousef Matarneh, a 45-year-old civil servant.

Abdullah has tried to forestall Arab Spring-style uprisings that have toppled autocratic regimes in Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen and Libya, and led to the war in Syria.

His reform roadmap envisions parliamentary polls as a vehicle toward having an elected prime minister for the first time in Jordan's history. Previously, it was the king's prerogative to appoint the premier.

Abdullah also has been trying to buttress his ailing economy, straining under $23 billion foreign debt, a record deficit of $2 billion and rising inflation, by inviting foreign investment and marketing Jordan as a tourist destination.

"If you want to change Jordan for the better, there is a chance, and that chance is through the upcoming elections," he told a gathering of 3,000 prominent politicians and businessmen on Tuesday. "There is a way, and that way is through the next parliament."

But the opposition, dominated by the powerful Muslim Brotherhood, is boycotting the Jan. 23 vote and vowing to continue street protests.

The Islamists argue that a new election system gives too much weight to traditional tribally based conservatives loyal to the monarchy who dominate local politics. The government insists that Jordan's system is used by many countries, and that the Islamists' preferred all-party list system would inflate their numbers.

Many Jordanians are keen to avoid the turmoil that followed the revolution in Egypt, which led to the election of a Muslim Brotherhood member as president of the Arab world's most populous nation.

"We will not trade our stability for anything. People in the region envy us for it," said 25-year-old Mohammed Shneikat, who works at a music store in Amman.

The king's supporters point to voter registration that has exceeded 2.3 million, or 33 percent of the country's 6 million population.

"Nobody wants the king to abdicate," said independent lawmaker Hosni Shiyyab. "There's a consensus among supporters and opponents that he should stay because he is a stabilizing factor among the different segments of the society."

There are, however, signs of increasing opposition. Street protests in Jordan have remained largely peaceful, but recent slogans have begun pointing to the king, breaking a longstanding taboo against criticizing him.

"Abdullah, listen well, your reforms are cosmetic. The Arab Spring's next stop is Amman," chanted 7,000 Islamist opposition and youth movements during a recent protest in the Jordanian capital ? the largest gathering in months.

Even the king's traditional supporters have started to voice unheard of criticism, with young Bedouins staging small rallies to rebuke the monarch, although their families still form the bedrock of support for Abdullah's Hashemite monarchy.

"He gave us nothing. In fact, he made us poorer and without jobs," lamented Yazan, 26, a high school teacher who earns $300 a month. He declined to give his last name fearing government reprisal.

NASA satellites are closely monitoring Tropical Storm Sandy in visible and infrared light as it approaches Jamaica. Sandy is now responsible for hurricane and tropical storm warnings and watches from Jamaica to Cuba, the Bahamas and southern Florida. Sandy is expected to become a hurricane before it reaches Jamaica and Cuba.

On Oct. 23, 2012 at 1545 UTC (11:45 a.m. EDT), the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument captured a visible image of Tropical Storm Sandy when its center was a couple of hundred miles south of Jamaica. Sandy's clouds filled up the eastern Caribbean Sea, and showed signs of good circulation. The MODIS image revealed that Sandy's cloud cover extends over 280 miles (440 km). Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 140 miles (220 km) from the center.

The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite captured infrared imagery of Tropical Storm Sandy later that day at 2:47 p.m. EDT. The infrared image showed the strongest thunderstorms surrounded the center of circulation. Those thunderstorms are reaching high into the troposphere where cloud top temperatures are as cold as -63 Fahrenheit (-52 Celsius).

On Oct. 24, the warnings and watches posted covered a large area. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Jamaica, the Cuban Provinces of Camaguey, Las Tunas, Granma, Santiago De Cuba, Holguin, and Guantanamo. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Haiti, the Central Bahamas, and the Northwestern Bahamas.

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for the Southeastern Bahamas, the Florida East Coast from Jupiter Inlet to Ocean Reef, the Florida Upper Keys from Ocean Reef to Craig Key, and Florida Bay.

At 8 a.m. EDT on Oct. 24, Tropical Storm Sandy's maximum sustained winds were on the edge of hurricane-force at 70 mph (110 kph). Hurricane strength is 74 mph. Sandy's center was located near latitude 16.6 north and longitude 76.9 west, just 95 miles (155 km) south of Kingston, Jamaica. Sandy is moving toward the north near 14 mph (22 kph) and the National Hurricane Center (NHC) noted that this general motion is expected to continue through Thursday (Oct. 25) accompanied by a gradual increase in forward speed.

According to NHC forecasters, the center of Sandy is expected to move across Jamaica by late this afternoon and evening today, Oct. 24 and move near or over eastern Cuba late tonight and Thursday morning. Oct. 25. Sandy is then expected to approach the central Bahamas on Thursday.

Chewing betel quid exposes half a billion people to direct carcinogens

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Chewing betel quid -- the fourth most popular psychoactive substance in the world after tobacco, alcohol and caffeine -- exposes its 600 million users to substances that act as direct carcinogens in the mouth, scientists are reporting in a new study. It appears in ACS' journal Chemical Research in Toxicology.

Mu-Rong Chao and Chiung-Wen Hu explain that betel quid (BQ) consists of nuts from the arcea tree, sometimes combined with spices, such as cardamom or saffron, and other ingredients. Available in commercial forms, BQ is popular among people in China, India and other Asian countries, and people of Asian heritage living in the U.S. and other countries. Scientists have known for decades that chewing BQ can lead to oral cancer, and showed recently that the substances in BQ could be changed into carcinogens in the body. The authors of this study explored whether there were any substances in the arcea nut that can cause cancer directly, without any need for the body to change or "activate" them.

They discovered that compounds in the arcea nut can "alkylate" the genetic material DNA, causing changes that increase the risk of cancer, and they are present in betel quid in amounts high enough to do so. "Our study showed that these alkylating agents are present at levels sufficient to cause DNA damage and could potentially have adverse implications to human health, particularly in the case of the development of oral cancer for BQ chewers," they say.

The authors acknowledge funding from the National Science Council, Taiwan.

Arlington Cemetery debuts new interactive map

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Arlington National Cemetery on Monday made available to the public a massive electronic database detailing the gravesites of the roughly 400,000 people buried there.

Cemetery officials built the database over the last two years to verify the accuracy of their records brought into question by reports of misidentified graves. Prior to 2010, the cemetery used paper records and maps to track who is buried where.

On Monday at the Association of the United States Army convention in Washington, the cemetery debuted an interactive map available through its website and through a free smartphone app. It uses geospatial technology to hone in on specific graves and can also be searched by name.

It can be accessed through the cemetery's website www.arlingtoncemetery.mil

When a name is called up, a viewer can see when the person was buried and the dates of their birth and death. Photos of the front and back of the headstone can also be viewed. Monuments and memorials that commemorate the service of specific military units are also included in the database.

The application also highlights some of the notable graves throughout the cemetery that are popular with the roughly 4 million visitors annually that the cemetery draws.

"This is a great day for veterans and our families," said Kathryn Condon, executive director of the Army National Military Cemeteries, which includes Arlington.

Officials say the new app makes it easier for people walking the cemetery to locate a loved one's burial place. The app can be downloaded at the cemetery's visitor center.

The database has been the subject of a painstaking review and even now is not 100 percent complete. Katharine Kelley, the cemetery's director of accountability, said that about 99.4 percent of the nearly 260,000 gravesites, niches and markers have been verified.

The remaining few deal largely with some of the cemetery's oldest graves and records, which date to the Civil War. In many cases, it may be an effort to verify the spelling of the first name of a spouse buried at the cemetery among disparate handwritten records.

Condon said she could not say how much it cost to develop the website and mobile app, largely because the work to develop the technology was conducted in house.

The geospatial technology used to power the smartphone is the same that the cemetery uses to coordinate the 25 to 30 burials conducted there every day. Care is taken to ensure, for example, that maintenance work at the cemetery is not conducted at the same time and place as a burial service.

Arlington officials say the cemetery is one of the most technically advanced in the nation.

Woman who jumped overboard from cruise ship rescued

A Carnival cruise ship passenger who was spotted jumping overboard was rescued Sunday, company officials said.

The 29-year-old woman was aboard the Carnival Destiny, which had left the Port of Miami on Saturday, when she was witnessed jumping overboard around 12:10 a.m., according to a statement from the company.

The ship immediately began search and rescue operations and located the woman. She was brought on board and treated at the ship's medical center.

Ship physicians determined the woman needed further treatment at a shoreside facility and the Destiny deviated its course to Key West instead of Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

The ship, which is on a five-day Caribbean cruise, is scheduled to return on Thursday.

Why mobile computing is stumping even the tech savviest disruptors ...

Today?s leading tech, marketing and advertising firms ? built and led by the disruptors of our time ? still don?t know quite what to make of the mobile computing disruption sweeping the world.

That?s the observation of the Washington Post?s Craig Timberg, who points out that mobile computing is breaking down the online advertising model ? developed and finely honed and mined over the past decade by the globe?s leading disruptors.

Indeed, e-commerce was a huge disruptor, and is now accompanied by the multiplier effect of social media. The problem is that online advertising models are based on PC-based Web searches, in which users are situated in one spot and are likely to whip out their credit cards to make on-the-spot purchases.

But consumer behavior is different when browsing or searching from a smartphone ? which tend to be based on end-users? locations. Mobile computing is increasingly cutting into this dynamic ? comScore estimates that the percentage of Web pages viewed from mobile devices is now about 13%, up from 7% a year ago.

The challenge, then, is to appeal to users who may be searching the Web while in a store for the best deals or more information on a product. But, Timberg notes, ?advertisers potentially lose out, too, because that research does not always lead directly to a sale.? The user may leave the store and go to a competitor. In turn, this lack of a direct connection between advertising and direct sales mean smaller marketing budgets. Typically, as a result, rates for ads on mobile search queries run about one-third less than for queries made from PCs.

This, in turn, is making things difficult for tech companies that have built huge businesses on online advertising, Timberg writes. ?It?s the riddle many in the tech industry are desperate to solve.?

Even Google ? the unflappable wunderkind of the tech industry ? is feeling this pain, Timberg illustrates. ?The money advertisers had paid per click was off by 15% compared with a year earlier. Driving this shift was the increasing share of ads appearing on the tiny screens of mobile devices instead of personal computers.?? Only Apple, with its large iPhone franchise and developer ecosystem ? seems to have the most highly engaged strategy on this disruptive new trend.

Eventually, tech firms, marketers and advertisers will adapt, and learn how to more accurately measure and monetize the mobile Web. Or, the online advertising revenue model may splinter down and be based on a more granular collection of data on return by device types. By that time of course, if history is a guide, a new disruptive force may be in the making.

Mass shooting reported in Wisconsin: 7 hospitalized, suspect at large

A shooting near a mall in Brookfield, Wis., on Sunday left at least seven people hospitalized, according to local news reports, and police are searching for the suspected shooter.

WISN-TV first reported a "mass shooting" at the Azana Salon & Spa across the street from the Brookfield Square Mall at around 11:15 a.m. local time.

According to police, the suspected shooter is a 6'1" black male weighing approximately 200 pounds and last seen wearing a grey sweater, blue jeans and a white and black backpack, and was driving a black 2003 Mazda Protege.

Officials initially described a "mass casualty" situation, WISN said, though to this point no fatalities have been confirmed. According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the mall has been placed on lockdown, as has a nearby country club.

A spokeswoman for Froedtert Memorial Hospital told the Associated Press that said four victims were being treated for non-life threatening injuries, and that three more victims were expected; an official at the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department told news service that deputies are looking for an active shooter.

SWAT, fire and rescue officials responded to the scene, and a Flight for Life helicopter landed in the mall's parking lot.

In August, Wade Michael Page, an Army veteran with white supremacist ties, opened fire at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wis., killing six and injuring three others before shooting himself.

And Sunday's shooting took place less than a mile from a hotel where a gunman opened fire during a Living Church of God service in 2005. Seven people were killed and four wounded in that shooting.
